Krabi town is, contrary to many assumptions, not directly on the sea, but rather in the mouth of the Krabi River and about 800 km south of the capital Bangkok. Krabi Town is also the capital of the province with the same name and has about 25,000 inhabitants.
The city itself therefore has no beaches, apart from the riverbank and is therefore not a typical resort itself. The tourist resorts, beaches and islands like Ao Nang, Noppharat Thara or Railay Beach are all several kilometers outside of Krabi town.
The city itself is still a kind of transit station for numerous individual tourists & backpackers who will go from here to the various beaches and islands by express boats, longtail boats and pickup taxis.
A few years ago however, the well known Krabi Pier from where the Boats used to leave for Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and other beaches, was relocated outside the city so that in became a bit less busy in the center and in the area of the old pier.
Much to the chagrin of the many guest houses and restaurants near the former pier, which had previously served the backpackers.
You can also still go by long tail boat from Krabi city (old pier) to Railay or Phra Nang Beach.
In addition to numerous city hotels, there are still many of the cheap guesthouses and hostels in the 100-200 Baht class and a typical Thai nightlife with a night market, Karaoke-BArs, as well as numerous bars, pubs & Restaurants.
Unlike many other cities in Thailand, Krabi Town is very clean and tidy. The authorities have spent a lot of money in road construction and parks in recent years.
Along the riverbank there are two nice parks, the Thara Park and the Chaofah Park. There are some sculptures, small ponds with fountains and some restaurants and you can have a rest under shady trees.
The park is often used by the locals for a picnic and students meet here after school.
There are also some nice hotels in the Krabi Town. If you kike it a little cheaper than the beach hotels in Ao Nang or Railay Beach, you can spend your holidays here in the city and start from here to the various tours and attractions.
The most famous and largest hotels in the city are the Krabi Front Bay or the Meritime Park & SPA Resort.
However, there are also many new and beautiful hotels in the city center and in the surrounding area. Here is an overview of the Krabi hotels with booking option.
So, I hope I could bring you closer to the advantages of our small provincial capital and encourage you for a stay or for a trip.
